ABUJA, Nigeria – The Federal House of Representatives is set to inaugurate a Local Organizing Committee on Nutrition and Food Security on October 31, 2024.
Chaired by Hon. Chike Okafor, Ph.D., Chairman of the House Committee on Nutrition and Food Security, the committee indicates the legislative drive to secure sustainable food access and nutrition across Nigeria.
This initiative builds on the National Legislative Network on Nutrition and Food Security, established on July 22, 2024, which unites federal and state legislators to combat malnutrition and food insecurity.
Hon. Okafor highlighted the committee’s alignment with the network’s mission, saying, “Our commitment is to drive legislative measures that support food security and nutrition across the country, working in tandem with both national and state partners.”
The inauguration will also introduce the National Summit on Nutrition and Food Security, scheduled for December 2024, aimed at consolidating efforts for nationwide food security.
The event will host key figures, including Agriculture Minister Sen. Abubakar Kyari, Speaker of the House Hon. Abbas Tajudeen, members of the Nutrition Society of Nigeria, and representatives from the Ministry of Budget and Economic Planning. Global organizations such as UNICEF, the World Bank, Oxfam, and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation are also expected to participate.
This summit underscores Nigeria’s dedication to a resilient, sustainable food system and serves as a platform for collaboration among policymakers, non-profits, and international development partners.
