BERLIN – Tens of thousands of music fans flocked to the Lollapalooza music festival in Berlin in soaring summer temperatures, the organizers said on Saturday evening.
Some 50,000 visitors at the start of the two-day festival at the Olympic park, the organizers said.
The highlight of the first evening was a performance by summer hit rapper Shirin David.
Fans braved the heat to dance in front of the seven stages starting in the afternoon.
Many brought fans to cool themselves as the temperature rose above 30 degrees Celsius. Video screens displayed tips on how to best cope with the heat.
The festival began smoothly, the organizers said. They had adjusted the security measures with the authorities following the recent deadly stabbings in Solingen, in western Germany.
Security measures are always raised for large events, the organizers said. The entry checks appeared to go smoothly through to the evening without any major delays.
The lineup includes British singer Sam Smith, rapper Cro and Nigerian Afrobeat musician Burna Boy.
Lollapalooza has been held at Berlin’s Olympic park since 2018. The US festival was founded in 1991 by Perry Farrell, singer of the band Jane’s Addiction. Lollapalooza made its European debut at Tempelhof field in Berlin in 2015.
