LAGOS, Nigeria – Edward Inyang, better known as Blackky, was a captivating phenomenon within the intricate weave of Nigerian music. His distinctive sound, crafted with the touch of the esteemed Premier Music label, ignited a fiery trajectory that promised musical immortality.

Yet, in a twist of fate shrouded in mystery, Blackky’s ascent abruptly halted after the release of his debut album in 1991, leaving a trail of questions in his absence. He was 24 in 1991 and had a very quick transition from a disc jockey, DJ, which he started in 1986 in his undergraduate days at the University of Lagos, where he measured in Sociology.

Blackky’s collaboration with Premier Music was a marriage of talent and ambition. The young artist’s unique musical vision aligned seamlessly with the label’s penchant for cultivating cutting-edge sounds, resulting in the critically acclaimed “About Tyme” album. The rhythmic sensibilities of Blackky’s Afropop blended seamlessly with Premier Music’s polished production, yielding a commercial success that propelled the artist into the limelight.

His debut album,  About Tyme  became an instant staple in the Nigerian music landscape, with its catchy hook and lively beats dominating airwaves and dance floors. The album boasted a number of hits like “Blackky Skank” and the sexually-charged “Sugar Stick”. It is worthy to note that it also featured the smash hit and dance floor darling, “Rosie”, a song most would mention as the biggest of his largely successful career.

Blackky’s charismatic stage presence, paired with his enigmatic persona, garnered the attention of a nation captivated by this rising star.

At 24  Blackky bagged a deal with Polygram Records after winning the Lekki Sunsplash Talent Hunt Contest.  His lyrics were so lascivious at the time that the Nigerian Broadcasting Commission, NBC had to put the hammer on the tracks Yanshman, Sugar Stick and Bang Belly.

However, the fairytale trajectory suddenly stalled as Blackky vanished without warning or explanation shortly after the album’s release. Premier Music, renowned for its meticulous artist management, found itself at the center of a perplexing mystery. Speculation raged among the public, with conjecture ranging from creative differences to unforeseen personal circumstances.

Adding intrigue to the situation, Premier Music maintained a conspicuously silent front, offering no clarification or updates on their erstwhile golden goose. This absence of information fed into the enigma, fostering a sense of intrigue that amplified with each passing day.

The mysterious disappearance of Blackky has prompted deeper examination of the music industry’s intricacies. Curiously, Premier Music’s stance remains unwavering, focusing on their roster of artists rather than addressing the absentee Blackky. Their refusal to engage with the situation fuels speculation of a potential fall-out or unforeseen circumstances of monumental proportions.

Nearly a decade after his disappearance, Blackky’s absence weighs heavily on the minds of music enthusiasts. The recall of his infectious hits carries a bittersweet note, reminding listeners of the artist who captivated them briefly before vanishing.

His popular songs include  Blackky Shank, Rosie, Bang Belly, Blackky’s  House, Killer Disease, Campus Guru, Wonderful Mum, Okada and the rest.

The  enigma surrounding Blackky’s disappearance and Premier Music’s reserved response continues to tantalize the public’s imagination. The intricate dynamics between artists and labels leave ample room for speculation, and the mystery deepens with each passing day.

Blackky’s music remains a testament to his brief but impactful sojourn in the industry, while his disappearance lingers as an unresolved conundrum that beckons resolution.
