21 killed as commercial bus crashes into truck in Abuja
ABUJA, Nigeria – Not less than 21 travelers met their end on Thursday when the commercial bus conveying them from Abuja to Kano State crashed into a truck.
The twenty-one travelers died on the spot while three others survived and were rushed to the Umaru Musa Memoriah Hospital in Sabon-Wuse for medical attention.
The dead bodies have been deposited in the morgue in the area.
It is not clear what exactly caused the accident but an official of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has been quoted by Channels as saying that the accident occurred close to a traffic diversion around Niger State, which forced all vehicles coming from the opposite directions to drive on a single lane due to the ongoing reconstruction of the Kaduna- Abuja highway .
The anonymous FRSC official said the truck driver immediately fled the scene of the accident, thereby leading to heavy traffic that built up on the busy highway for several hours.
The Abuja-Kaduna highway is notorious for heartbreaking incidents from terrible accidents to kidnapping as a result of the bad condition of the road.
We gathered that contractors handling reconstruction of the road have been on it and have not been able to complete it due to paucity of funds putting commuters into horrible condition traversing the road.
