Nigerian star, Olise starts training with Bayern squad
MUNICH – Bayern Munich newcomer Michael Olise has joined the team training for the first time since his transfer on Wednesday ahead of the German Cup first round match against Ulm.
The 22-year-old forward missed most of the pre-season with the club because he was playing with the France national team at the Paris Olympics. France took silver in the men’s tournament after losing to Spain in the final.
Bayern officially start their 2024-25 season with the Cup match at SSV Ulm on Friday.
Ulm will play in the second division this season for the first time after 23 years in the lower leagues and are the “absolute underdogs” against Bayern, coach Thomas Wörle said.
But the squad is looking forward to the clash with the German record champions.
“Of course, this is a really big game for us, not just as a team. For us as a club, for the city of Ulm, for the whole region, for our fans. We’re really looking forward to it,” Wörle said.
He vowed to deliver a “real fight” saying: “Nothing is impossible and we will fight for it.” Bayern, meanwhile, will try to avoid being stunned in the early stages of the competition again.
In the past four seasons, they were eliminated in the second round three times, including shocking defeats to Holstein Kiel in 2021 and Saarbrücken last year.
