BERLIN – More than 250 people have drowned in German waters over the first seven months of 2024, a significant rise from last year’s figure.

The number of deaths from drowning has risen to 253 so far this year, representing 35 more than in the first seven months of 2023, the German Life Saving Association (DLRG) said on Thursday.

“There would have been even more fatalities if the summer weather had been more stable,” said DLRG President Ute Vogt.

For the third year in a row, the number of deaths recorded in rivers has risen significantly, from 77 to 92.

“Flowing waters harbour the most dangers,” said Vogt.
