BERLIN – Alex Mumbru is the new coach of the Germany basketball team, the German Basketball Federation DBB said on Thursday.
The Spanish coach replaces Gordon Herbert, who led Germany to their maiden World Cup title last year and to a fourth place at the Paris Games.
“We wanted to have a coach who’s young, who fits our team and who wants to make developments,” DBB president said.
This is the first time Mumbru will work as national team coach.
“I’m looking forward to continuing the great work that has been done with the national team in recent years. I’m ready to take on this challenge,” said the 45-year-old.
Most recently, he coached Valencia. As a player, Mumbru won the World Cup in 2006 with Spain and took silver at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing.
His first challenge with Germany will be the Euro 2025 qualifiers in November.
Herbert had announced he would leave the team in advance and will now take the job at Bayern Munich.
