MUNICH – France winger Kingsley Coman said that he wants to “make more history” with his national team at the Euro 2024 and stressed he’s not interested in second place.
“Later, you only remember the triumphs. I want to make even more history with my nation,” he told the media group Redaktionsnetzwerk Deutschland in an interview published on Monday ahead of France’s opener against Austria later.
“When you take part in such an important tournament, you want to win it, regardless of whether you won the title last time or not. I’m not interested in second or third place,” he said.
Due to injury, Coman was not part of the French squad that were crowned World Cup champions in Russia in 2018. In 2022, he reached the final with the team but was defeated by Argentina in Qatar. The last time his nation won the Euros was in 2000.
Winning the title in Germany is possible “and I believe in it, because the potential is there, but of course we also know that the competition is enormous.” In the tricky Group D, France also face the Netherlands and Poland.
The fact that the tournament is taking place in Germany makes the Euros a very special one for the Bayern Munich player and that’s why he gave everything he had to get fit in time, following a season plagued by injuries.
“I’m going to enjoy every moment and play with a lot of desire,” he said.
