BERLIN – Horst Hrubesch will coach the German women’s team   during the 2024 Paris Olympics if they qualify for the tournament, German Football Federation (DFB) president Bernd Neuendorf confirmed on Friday.

Hrubesch, 72, became interim coach in October after coach Martina Voss-Tecklenburg went on sick leave after a group stage exit at the World Cup in summer and her contract was then terminated by mutual consent in November.

Hrubesch led the team into the Nations League Finals in February where two Olympic tickets are on offer apart from directly qualified hosts France.

Germany will qualify if they win the semi-final against France or the match for third place. World champions Spain and the Netherlands are the other semi-finalists.

Hrubesch has said he wouldlike to continue until the Olympics if the team made it, telling Thursday’s Hamburger Morgenpost paper: “The Olympics would be an absolute highlight. For the girls but for me as well.”

Hrubesch led the German men to Olympic silver in 2016 and his coaching merits also include European titles with the men’s U19 and U21 national teams. As a player he won Euro 1980 and the 1983 Champions Cup with Hamburg.
