At least 820 people killed, 300 wounded as earthquake rips through Morocco

MARRAKESH, Morocco – At least 820 people have been killed and more than 300 others injured when a powerful earthquake, with a magnitude of 6.8 on the reital scale hit Marrakesh, Morocco.
The earthquake, whose impact could be felt 72 kilometers away destroyed several properties and shaking several buildings.
Local media showed videos of many residents running into the streets for their lives with several buildings plunging to their base.
The earthquake which occurred at 11pm local time has a depth of 18.5 kilometers northwest of Marrakesh.
Rescue operation is underway as many people are still trapped under the rubble.
Meanwhile, the United States has condoned with the people Morocco and indicated its readiness to render assistance.
“On behalf of the people of the United States, I express my deep sadness at the loss of life and destruction caused by yesterday’s earthquake in Morocco and extend my heartfelt condolences to the families of those affected”, President Joe Biden said in a statement.
He added that the United States is ready to provide any necessary assistance as Morocco responds to this tragedy.
“Our thoughts are with the Moroccan people, and we offer our unwavering support and solidarity to our Moroccan partners at this tragic time”.
