India’s spacecraft Chandrayaan-3 lands safely in the moon
INDIA – Indian space science has recorded a major success following the successful soft landing of its spacecraft Chandrayaan-3 on the moon.
This took place shortly after a similar mission by Russia failed when its spacecraft crash-landed on the surface of the moon.
With the success of the exercise, India now becomes the fourth country after the former Soviet Union, the United States and China to have successfully carried out soft landing on the moon.
Scientists from the India space station watched this significant development through live telecast.
Prior to handling, the Automatic Landing Sequence (ALS) of the spacecraft was initiated to await arrival of the Lander Module (LM) at the designated point, around 17:44 Hrs. IST.
“Upon receiving the ALS command, the LM activates the throttleable engines for powered descent. The mission operations team will keep confirming the sequential execution of commands”, the space centre said, followed by the final message, “Chandrayaan-3 has successfully soft-landed on the moon. Congratulations India”.
