AWKA, Anambra – The coordinator of Anambra State National Youth Service Corps NYSC,  Mrs Blessing Ekene Iruma on Friday stated that 1610 corps members were deployed to serve in  state for the 2023 Batch B’ stream one.

She made the statement  during the oceasion of swearing – in ceremony of 2023 Batch B’ stream one orientation course held at Nnamdi Azikiwe NYSC Unity Permanent Orientation Camp Umuawulu/Mbaukwu  Awka South local government council of Anambra State.

“Your Excellency, I am pleased to report that as at the close of registration midnight, Thursday 13 July 2023, a couple of hours ago, a total of 1,610 corps members, comprising 702 males and 908 females were registered and are called up for this swearing in ceremony.

“I am delighted to inform his Excellency that since the arrival of the Prospective Corps members, their response and participation in the various activities have been commendable; they have been disciplined and helpful to the running of the day to day activities of the Camp…

“The purpose of this Orientation Course is to properly introduce and acquaint the Prospective Corps members with the ideals and objectives of the NYSC programme.

“The Orientation Course, is an opportunity for them to learn important skills, imbibe discipline and foster a sense of nationhood and unity. It is also a time for them to interact with one another, build friendships and develop leadership qualities.

“I would like to express my profound gratitude to the Government of Anambra State for their continuous support towards the NYSC Scheme. Your commitment to the welfare and wellbeing of Corps Members is exemplary and we are grateful for the support.

“However I would like to use this opportunity to appeal to both the State and Local Government authorities for intervention in the area of locating the proposed NYSC South East Area Skill Acquisition Centre in Umuawulu.

“This will provide Corps Members and the entire community the opportunity to acquire valuable skills that will enable them to become self-employed and contribute to the development of the State.

“We also appeal to the Anambra State Government to speedily intervene in the erosion menace currently threatening the structures of the orientation camp. I would also like to express my sincere appreciation to the host communities of Umuawulu/Mbaukwu as well as the Awka South Local Government administration for their warm reception and hospitality. Your support and cooperation have made it possible for us to hold this Orientation Course successfully.

“Dear Corps Members I want to encourage you to continue to be of good conduct throughout your stay in Anambra State. Remember that you represent not only your families but also the NYSC and the nation at large. I assure you that we have put in place adequate security measures to ensure your safety and protection.

“I implore you all to cooperate with NYSC officials and members of the host community. Your behavior and attitude will determine the success of your stay here. Take advantage of the various skill acquisition programs available and actively participate in community development projects. These opportunities will not only empower you but also leave a lasting impact on the community” she said.

According to her,during the course of this Orientation, there will be various cultural and recreational activities to engage in,encourage the youngsters to actively participate and embrace the rich cultural heritage of Anambra State.

She said  it will foster unity and understanding among Corps Members from different parts of the country” she said .

Governor Charles Soludo represented by his Chief of staff Mr Ernest  Ezeajughi  at the swearing called on the Corps members to be  unrelenting and  be selfless  in the service to the Nation.

According to Soludo “The NYSC curriculum is such that your sense of judgment coupled with your natural gifting will be harnessed on this platform to contribute your quota to nation building.

“I thanked the Almighty God for journey mercies granted you all as you traversed the length and breadth of this great nation to report to Anambra for national service.

“I rejoice with you for successfully acquiring the various Degrees/Diplomas which have qualified you to be mobilized into the service of the Fatherland”

He also stated that the NYSC has successfully mitigated the challenges confronting the nation in critical areas of national need especially in the educational, health, agricultural and infrastructural sectors.

The NYSC scheme has over the years been instrumental in promoting unity,  cultural integration and national development. It has provided platforms for young graduates from different backgrounds to come together serve the nation and build bridges of understanding and friendship. These, among many other contributions validate the loud clamour for sustenance of the National Youth Service Corps.

“My dear fellow Compatriots, I assure you that your stay in Anambra State will be filled with a plethora of experiences that will shape your personal and professional growth. Anambra State is known for its rich cultural heritage, entrepreneurial spirit and commitment to excellence. As you engage in various community development projects and activities, I encourage you to fully immerse yourselves in the unique Anambra experience and to  make the most of this opportunity. My administration accords great value on Youth development which is reflected in our various programmes aimed at creating enabling environment for the youths to develop their full potentials.  Notable among these programmes is the “One Youth, Two Skills” programme. I encourage you to utilize the time to fully maximize your potentials while you serve in the state.

“I urge you to embrace the core values of the NYSC which include discipline, integrity, teamwork, patriotism and tolerance. These values will serve as a compass ; guiding you through the challenges you may encounter during your service year. Remember that you are not just ambassadors of your respective institutions but also ambassadors of Nigeria. Your conduct and contributions will shape perceptions and influence the lives of the people you come in contact with”

Soludo also  assured corps that  Anambra State Government was fully committed to creating an enabling environment for the NYSC scheme to thrive.

” We will continue to provide necessary infrastructure, security and welfare support to ensure the safety and wellbeing of all corps members. The government will also explore opportunities for skills acquisition entrepreneurship training and empowerment programmes to enhance the employability and self-reliance of corps members after their service year by supporting the location of the NYSC South East Skill Acquisition Centre within the State precisely in Umuawulu” he stated.
