They were confirmed dead by U.S coastguard after the wreckage of the OceanGate submarine was discovered about 1,600 feet below sea level.
“They died as a result of catastrophic implosion” of the submersible conveying them, U.S. Coast Guard Rear Adm. John Mauger announced at a press conference.
According to him, five major pieces of debris were found 1,600 feet from the site of the Titanic on the sea floor. Mauger said they have notified the families and offered their condolences. Before them, OceanGate, announced that the five passengers “have sadly been lost.”
According to them, these men were true explorers who shared a distinct spirit of adventure, and a deep passion for exploring and protecting the world’s oceans.
“Our hearts are with these five souls and every member of their families during this tragic time.”
Hours before the announcement, the coastguard assured all that that the submersible has 96-hour supply of breathable air but that because the door was bolted from the outside, those inside would not have been able to open it on their own even if they were able to reach the surface.
