BERLIN – German health authorities are moving to create a ‘heat protection plan’ for the population as climate change drives up global temperatures.

“The occurrence of heat waves has become increasingly likely with climate change,” Health Minister Karl Lauterbach said in excerpts of a concept paper quoted by Bild newspaper on Sunday.

Lauterbach told the outlet that he would discuss the matter with those most affected, experts and responsible departmental colleagues on Monday.

“Heat protection is life protection,” he added. “Elderly people, people in need of care, people with previous illnesses, but also children, pregnant women and people who spend a lot of time outdoors for work or private purposes are at risk when heat waves roll over Germany.”

The minister last week announced “concerted action” to better protect citizens. According to the paper under review, the plan will aim to reduce fatalities, trigger concrete protective measures and improve education about heat hazards.

The use of the heat warning system of the German Meteorological Service (DWD) is to play a role in warning people and taking action as required.
