Eintracht Frankfurt’s Axel speaks on alleged interest in Bayern Munich
FRANKFURT – Eintracht Frankfurt board spokesman Axel Hellmann confirmed he will stay at the European League champions and said there were never talks with Bayern Munich for the role of CEO in case incumbent Oliver Kahn was dismissed by the Bavarians.
“There were never talks or a concrete request to take over Oliver Kahn’s position or a similar job,” Hellmann told a news conference on Tuesday.
“It’s clear that, as a person in charge at the DFL (German football league), you hold talks with many people at Bayern, the industry leader and flagship of the Bundesliga, especially to understand the investor process and to obtain opinions and feedback on it.
“But at no point did this result in any concrete offer or even a conversation about such a role,” said Hellmann, who is also a member of the DFL executive committee.
The Frankfurt official has a contract with the club until 2027, but recent media reports said he was a candidate to replace Kahn at Bayern.
The former goalkeeper has a contract with the Bavarians until 2024, but is under pressure due to the team’s recent results and the dismissal of coach Julian Nagelsmann in March.
Thomas Tuchel was signed as a replacement but failed to advance in the German Cup and Champions League, as now the Bundesliga is their only title hope.
Bayern top the Bundesliga, but are closely followed by Borussia Dortmund, who sit just one point behind with four games to go.
