Bayern women’s team seal Bundesliga title with 11-1 goal margin
MUNICH – Bayern Munich’s women secured their fifth German title with an 11-1 home thrashing of relegated Turbine Potsdam on Sunday, a day after the men’s team also took the Bundesliga crown.
Bayern Munich’s women secured their fifth German title with an 11-1 home thrashing of relegated Turbine Potsdam on Sunday, a day after the men’s team also took the Bundesliga crown.
Watched by Saturday’s championship-winning hero Jamal Musiala in lederhosen, the women put on a real show as they made sure of the title on the final day of the season.
Japan’s Saki Kumagai, Serbia’s Jovana Damnjanovic and Germany’s Lea Schüller netted doubles while there were also goals from Lina Magull and Carolin Simon, with England’s Georgia Stanway, Iceland’s Glodis Perla Viggosdottir and an own goal also on the scoresheet.
It was 7-0 at half-time, exposing the gulf between the new champions and a Potsdam side which had dominated the women’s game in Germany before 2012.
Bayern’s women had pulled clear of defending champions Wolfsburg in recent weeks and end a stormy season for the club as a whole with more silverware.
Club chief executive Oliver Kahn has been fired because of the men’s lacklustre season, where they went out in the last eight of the Champions League and German Cup.
Wolfsburg’s women finished two points back in second following a 2-1 home win over Freiburg. They can at least console themselves with already having lifted a record 10th German Cup earlier this month – also against Freiburg – while next weekend they meet Barcelona in the Champions League final.
Bayern and Wolfsburg have both benefited from investment linked to the men’s side of their clubs while the likes of Potsdam, without such an association, have struggled in the modern professional era.
