Abeokuta, others plunged into darkness as 9 TCN towers collapse
LAGOS, Nigeria – Residents of Abeokuta in Ogun State and neighboring environment will have to contend with total darkness for some time following confirmation from the Transmission Company of Nigeria, TCN that nine towers have collapsed as at Tuesday, May 23, 2023.
In a statement, Ndidi Mba, General Manager, Public Affairs said that the collapse occurred from tower 56 to tower 65 along the Papalanto/Abeokuta 132 kv transmission due to activities of vandals.
Quoting General Manager, (T), Lagos Region, Engr. Mojeed Akintola, the towers collapse was discovered yesterday after a tripping was recorded and a team was dispatched to trace the fault, leading to discovery of the collapsed towers.
“As a result, Abeokuta, and its environs are present out of power supply even as efforts are ongoing to supply bulk electricity through an alternate line to enable Ibadan DisCo to distribute electricity to its customers whose supply is affected by the incident”, he said.
He condemned activities of the vandals, stating that their nefarious act negatively impacted the grid expansion efforts of the company, adding that resources that would have been used to further improve the grid infrastructure in Ogun State would now be used to replace the vandalized towers.
