MUNICH – Bayern Munich winger Leroy Sané has said he’s aware he needs to do better when it comes to performance, but he also believes he’s judged “too harshly” by football fans and pundits.
“I know that I need to do better in some actions, that I have to score more goals, but I always have the feeling that I’m often judged too harshly in public,” he told an interview to broadcasters Sport1 published on Tuesday.
“After one goal, I’m celebrated; after two or three weaker games it’s discussed whether I’m still good enough for Bayern or the national team,” he said.
Sané has been going through a turbulent moment with Bayern following the departure of coach Julian Nagelsmann and the German Cup exit, which was “extremely upsetting.”
“Overall, we should have created more chances. We have only ourselves to blame for this defeat,” he said about the 2-1 loss to Freiburg.
The winger said he has a “very good relationship” with Nagelsmann and that he was “sorry he had to leave because we as a team weren’t able to deliver the results we had hoped for.”
But new coach Thomas Tuchel is seen by the player so far as “as a very communicative and highly motivated coach. In many aspects, he reminds me of when I worked with Pep Guardiola,” he said referring the Manchester City coach.
Bayern visit City on Tuesday for the first leg of the Champions League quarter-finals and Sané is “incredibly happy” too face his former club, where he played from 2016 to 2020.
“I had a wonderful time at City and still have some friends in the team. I’m looking forward to seeing all the familiar faces again, and of course the stadium and the fans,” he said.
