BERLIN – Bayer Leverkusen has renewed the contract of young defender Piero Hincapié by one more year until 2027, the Bundesliga club said on Sunday.
Sporting director Rolfes told Bild TV on Sunday that the club acted after Hincapié, 21, had generated interest after playing well for Ecuador at the recent World Cup in Qatar.
“It is always our aim to be in a strong position,” Rolfes said.
However, a summer departure amid interest from clubs including England’s Tottenham Hotspur may still be possible even though Rolfes said that Hincapié’s contract contained no release clause.
“It is better most of the times without a release clause, but sometimes there is nothing wrong about it. The price is the deciding factor,” Rolfes said.
Hincapié said in the club statement that Leverkusen are “exactly the right club.
“I wasn’t promised too much here but I was given the time on the pitch at a high level as a young player that I wanted. I’ve been able to settle in here and reinforce my place in the national team. It’s great motivation for me to continue to produce performances in coming years,” he said.
