ANAMBRA, Nigeria – Presiding Bishop and General Superintendent, Grace of God Mission International Church, Awada, Bishop Paul Nwachukwu has debunked stories making the rounds that terrorists  attempted  to bomb his church in Onitsha Anambra state .

Bishop Nwachukwu in a statement, he personally signed on Wednesday said that the Facebook report by one Chinasa Nworu alleging terrorists attempted to attack  his   church was  false and malicious, just like the Anambra Police Command had earlier on said.

“Our attention has been drawn to a Facebook post by one Chinasa Nworu which alleged that four Fulani terrorists sneaked into one of the branches of the church at Awada in an attempt to blow up the church.  The report  said  one of the terrorists was captured and set ablaze while the other three escaped.

“We wish to unequivocally state that our church in Awada was not attacked and nobody or group of persons attempted to detonate a bomb in the church” he said.

According to him, the post was false, misleading and mischievous. He urged the general public to disregard the news as it is a complete falsehood.

“We enjoin our members to feel free to worship the Almighty God we serve who will not allow us to be put to shame.  They should feel free to attend all weekly activities for no weapon fashioned against us shall prosper. It is also worthy of note that the Police Public Relations Officer Anambra state, Toochukwu Ikenga has released a statement which dismissed any attempted attack on the church” he said .

Prior to this statement, the Anambra State Police command had debunked  the Facebook report that four  Fulani sneaked into Awada Grace of God church on Sunday with intention too bomb the church.

The command in a statement issued by its spokesman DSP Ikenga Tochukwu, on Tuesday said the   Facebook report was the handiwork mischief makers with intention  to cause tension in the State and  incite ethnic/religion hatred.

According to him, such mischievous publication was unfortunate and it is  capable of misinforming and misleading the general public.

“The attention of the Anambra State Police Command has been drawn to a publication from a facebook user, Chinasa Nworu saying that Four Fulani Terrorist sneaked into Awada Grace of God church on Sunday 3/7/2022 in the evening to bomb the church.

“As few people were still in the church. One of them was captured  and burnt  to ashes. While three of them escaped and  ran into the  Nigeria military barrack in that area.  It is not only false but a complete mischievous scheme by mischief makers to cause tension in the State by inciting ethnic/religion hatred and conflict. The Police Command will never allow bad elements in any guise to distract the peace we enjoy in the state” he said .

According to him, “the Command wishes to state as follow, at about 3pm on same date, the Command received a distress call, along NEPA road Awada, that  male criminal, Name and Address unknown was set ablaze. The operatives, on arrival at the scene made enquiries from eyewitness, shows that the victim is a criminal caught in an attempt to rob an innocent citizen before he was lynched and set ablaze by angry mob”.

He also said that  from the geographical map in the area shows there is no Military Barrack close to where the incident occurred.

“It was just a mischievous and sensational reaction by the Facebook user to achieve his selfish desire from the unfortunate incident. Recall the Command has always condemn the act of mob action by some members of the public who resort to jungle justice whenever they arrest suspects in respect of any crime without recourse to the Police for proper investigation” he stated .

However,  he said that the Commissioner of Police, CP Echeng Echeng has ordered immediate investigation on the Facebook user. He  described the mendacious publication as unfortunate and one that is capable of misinforming and misleading the general public.

The commissioner also warned the  originators and peddlers to desist forthwith, as they will not be spared if apprehended.
