TUNIS – President of Tunisian, Mr.  Kais Saied has sacked 57 judges over allegation of corruption.

The President who issued the sack letter to the judges accused them of protecting terrorists and that he had given them time to embark on self cleansing but to no avail.

Among those sacked is the former head of Supreme Judicial Council,  Youssef Bouzaker, and  Bachir Akremi, whom  political activists accuse of being too close to the Islamist Ennahda party and of stopping cases against it. Ennahda and Akremi both deny that.

The Supreme Judicial Council  has been  the main guarantor of judicial independence since the 2011 revolution that introduced democracy.

Meanwhile, the opposition has described sacking of the judges as a dangerous move, adding that the development has stripped the judiciary of its well established independence.
