LAGOS, Nigeria – It may not have crossed your minds that electric cars would be driven by ordinary Nigerians in the twentieth century not to talk of manufacturing the cars in Nigeria. Not even, the most advanced countries would have given Nigeria this chance.
But here it is, drivers are now using locally manufactured electric vehicles in Borno State to convey Nigerians who have been at the receiving end of high cost of Premium Motor Spirit, PMS(petrol) which has driven the cost of transportation far beyond the reach of the common man.
But the electric cars which are now in commercial quantities in Kano have become the messiah of transportation in Nigeria.
Manufactured by Phoenix Renewables, led by Mustapha Abubakar Gajibo, who is Managing Director have reduced the cost of transportation in the city of Borno and environs and by extension saving the environment.
The vehicles are constructed from scratch in Borno State and not conversion of existing vehicles as reported by some.
It is the first time that electric vehicles are made in Nigeria. Prior to this, what was obtained was conversion of existing petrol powered vehicles into gas in Benin City that also saved cost of transportation.
In his latest tweet, the Managing director said “today marks 30 days since our electric city buses commenced operations in Maiduguri Nigeria, we have recorded over 21,000 passengers and we have saved them over N1,100,000 by charging them N50 instead of N100 and also saved the environment 27300g of Carbon monoxide. Green city…”.
His innovation has been described as an example of the can do spirit in the Nigerian youths if they are giving the enabling environment and support.
