EJIGBO, Lagos, Nigeria – Properties worth several millions were on Friday reduced to ashes when fire razed Oke-Afa Planks & Building Materials Market, Ejigbo otherwise referred to as Jakande Plank Market.  

The fire which occurred late in the evening when the traders  have left the market raged till early hours of Saturday, leaving nothing for the traders to hold on to when they arrived the market.

Reacting to the incident, Director General Lagos State Emergency Management Agency,  LASEMA, Dr. Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu said the agency received a distress call on Friday night at 9:30pm regarding a fire outbreak at Oke-Afa Planks & Building Materials Market, Ejigbo and deployed its resources immediately.

Upon arrival, he said it was discovered that the plank market which consists of 378 shops  was engulfed in a wild inferno on Friday night and continued raging till this morning, Saturday 18th, December 2021.

He said the immediate cause of the inferno could not be ascertained as at the time of filling in this report but that all efforts by the Agency’s Response Team, its Fire Men in collaboration with Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service to put out the fire and prevent it from spreading to adjoining buildings proved successful as the fire was curtailed from spreading further and put out completely.

“Fortunately, there is no record of casualties and no loss of lives but the fire affected the following: 294 shops were totally razed down; 2 residential bungalows; 1 market Mosque, Fence of De Palatables Event Centre, 3 Overhead storage tanks”, he said.

Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu sympathised with the shop owners who have lost a fortune to the unfortunate incident and other residents of the affected buildings.

He thereafter appealed to all traders to ensure their properties are well insured. He calls on all residents of Lagos to be safety cautious and vigilant especially at this Harmattan season which is harsh and prone to fire incidents.

The LASEMA Boss reiterated the need to be very watchful and at alert to reduce the risk and vulnerability to fire outbreaks caused by the harsh season, because ’emergency management is everyone’s business’

According to him, the  administration of Mr. Governor, Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu will continue to ensure that safety of lives and properties of Lagosians are of utmost priority, LASEMA DG stated.

Other Responders at the incident scene were Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Lagos State Neighbourhood Safety Corps, Nigeria Police Force Ejigbo Division, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps.
