Cooking gas hits N7, 400 for 12.5kg
LAGOS, Nigeria – There seems to be no end to the continued rise in the price of cooking gas in Nigeria. Cooking gas also referred to as LPG was sold a little above N1000 few years back and since the arrival of this administration there has been a continued rise in the price to such an extent that it is now sold from gas stations for as much N7, 400 for 12.5 kg.
This continued increase in the price of gas has been linked to the decision of the Federal Government to implement a 7.5 per cent tax on imported Liquefied Petroleum Gas.
We gathered that about 70 percent of cooking gas in the country is imported with the rest complemented by the Nigerian Liquefied Natural Gas, NLNG.
A resident who bought the product brought along the Lagos – Ibadan axis told our correspondent, that 12.5 kg was sold to him for N7, 500 and that the price could go up in the build up to Christmas.
The resident who does not want his name in print expressed frustration that Nigerians could be made to pay that much for cooking gas, which can easily be harnessed from natural gas flared all over the Niger Delta.
He said it is very sad that government is doing nothing about the development after encouraging Nigerians to adopt cooking gas as against kerosene.
