ABUJA, Nigeria – A Federal High Court sitting in Abuja today granted bail to 12 associates of self-styled Yoruba nation agitator, Mr. Sunday Adeyemo better known as Sunday Igboho bail.
The 12 associates were arrested when operatives of the Department of State Service, DSS invaded Sunday Igboho’s home in Soko, Oyo State.
Justice Obiora Egwuatu granted bail to the agitators after overruling DSS, which opposed bail for four out of the 12 persons that have been detained by the Service since the invasion, early July.
In its testimony, DSS had okayed bail for eight of Igboho’s associates, namely Abdulateef Ademola Onaolapo, Tajudeen Irinyole, Diekola Jubril Ademola, Ayobami Donald and Uthman Opeyemi Adelabu for what it described as minimal involvement in Igboho’s alleged criminal activities.
The DSS however opposed bail for four detained associates, namely Amudat Habitat Babatunde, Abideen Shittu, Jamiu Noah Oyetunji and Bamidele Sunday for their alleged deep involvement in the stock piling arms.
In his ruling, Justice Egwuatu held that the Constitution empowered the court to exercise its discretionary powers to grant bail.
Justice Egwuatu however granted bail in the sum of N5million with two sureties each to eight of Igboho’s associates, and N10m with two sureties each for the 4 whom DSS has reasons to believe were deeply involved in stockpiling arms.
Sureties must be resident in Abuja, adding that one of them must be a civil servant not below grade level 12.
All sureties must show evidence of tax payment in the past three years and also depose to an affidavit of means. The 4 applicants opposed by DSS were directed to report to DSS office first Monday every month for 3 months with effect from September 1, 2021.
