PORT-AU-PRINCE – President Jovenel Moïse of Haiti has been assassinated. He was killed at his private residence in Port-au-Prince  following an attack by unknown gunmen at about 1 am, Wednesday morning.

The First Lady is said to have been injured in the attack.  Interim Prime Minister Claude Joseph said the gunmen seized control of the residence after disarming the President’s security men before proceeding to kill him.

Mr. Jovenel Moise(53) has been in power since February 2017, when then President Michel Martelly stepped down from office.

His administration has been characterized by accusation of corruption and mass unrest.
