ABUJA, Nigeria – The Federal Government has directed the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) to immediately commence the process of licensing all Over the top media services (OTT) and social media operations in Nigeria.
The Federal Government gave the direction in a statement suspending Twitter Operations in Nigeria.
In the statement signed by Special Assistant to the Minister of Information and Culture, Mr. Segun Adeyemi, the Federal Government said it has suspended, indefinitely, the operations of the microblogging and social networking service, Twitter, in Nigeria.
The Federal Government suspended Twitter following its decision to delete President Muhammadu Buhari’s tweet, threatening to shock trouble makers and deal with them in the language they understand. Twitter also took down the video broadcast containing the offensive statement.
President Muhammadu Buhari had made the statement while addressing representatives of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) who had presented reports on destruction of INEC properties in the South East by unknown gunmen.
The development prompted an uproar from Nigerians and ministers, with Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Muhammed, saying that Twitter was probably up to a mission in Nigeria.
