Cholera kills 289 people in Nigeria

LAGOS, Nigeria -The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) says not less than 289 people have killed by Cholera in the last six months. The NCDC which made the revelation in a statement said a total of 10, 833 cases have so far been reported, while 112 cases were confirmed.
The NCDC added that since the beginning of the month an increasing number cholera cases have been reported across the state.
“The most affected states are Plateau, Bauchi, Gombe, Kano, Zamfara, Bayelsa and Kaduna”, the NCDC said, adding that the given the risk of large outbreak across the states, the NCDC has activated an EOC, co-led by the Federal Ministry of Environment, and Water Resource, given the link between cholera and water, sanitation and hygiene.
The NCDC described cholera as preventable and treatable epidemic-prone disease which is transmitted by eating contaminated food or water, adding that Cholera cases increase with the onset of the rainy season.
“The risk of death from cholera is higher when treatment is delayed. It is very important to visit a health facility if you have symptoms such as watery diarrhea and vomiting”, the NCDC said.
