LAGOS, Nigeria – Celebrated expert of Indigo and Adire, Nigeria’s socio-cultural arts, Nike Davies Okundaye is 70. A very fulfilled woman known worldwide for breathtaking works did not celebrate alone.
Nobel Laurette, Professor Wole Soyinka, and the Governor of Lagos State, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu and sun State Governor, Mr. Adegboyega Oyetola and his wife, Kafayat were among the important dignitaries that graced the occaision held at the Banquet Hall of Eko Hotel & Suites, Victoria Island, Lagos.
Also precent at the occasion was her lovely husband, her husband, Chief Reuben Okunday, General Manager Operational, Mez Zheng and the Special Adviser to the Governor, Mr. Solomon Bonu Sanu.
Nike Okundaye had her early life as a young girl in Ogidi-Ijum, Kogi State where he imbibed the spirit of Indigo and the art of Adire. She was influenced in the art her great grand mother, Ibitola, the Iyalode of Ogidi, Kogi State, a renowed Adire maker of her day, who she has variously described as her mentor.
Nike Davies Okundaye is renowned for creating various unique patterns of Adire. Some of her unique patterns include Adan, Eye n Joka, Ewe Ege, Omo Leye Aiye, Iyari, Abule Agbo Le, Ade, Olokoto, Abebe, Alangba Brekete, Eja, Sekeseke and Olrunkun Ayo.
Others include Sekere, Igi Odan, Isana, Jigi, Wala Ori Mi Pe, Opo Ilee Mapo, Pakiti, Gangan, Igba Meji, Agborun and Omi among others.
