NBC suspends Channels TV

ABUJA, Nigeria – The National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) has suspended the broadcast licence of Channels Television of the broadcast and interview of IPOB leader and Spokesman of the organization, Mr. Emmanuel Powerful on Political Update.

In a letter sent to Channels Television, Acting Director – General, NBC, Mr. Armstrong Idachaba said that Channels violated sections of the National Broadcasting Code, which it quoted in the letter and subsequently suspended the  station.  The programme, according to NBC was broadcast on  7 pm of Sunday, 25th April 2021.

NBC which also fined Channels Television station N5 million for the infraction described IPOB as  secessionist organization proscribed by a Nigerian court and the comments of the IPOB leader as inciting  and that the station failed to caution or reprimand  him, contrary to the broadcast code.

According to the NBC, the speaker made derogatory, false and misleading statements about the Nigerian army, despite being proscribed by a court of law.
