LAGOS, Nigeria – Imade Anikulapo Kuti in conjunction with his father Femi Anikulapo Kuti has released Legacy his first musical album. Legacy according to the musician is about continuation of the legacy of the late Afrobeat King, Fela Anikulapo Kuti.
One of the singles in the album has the theme, Your Enemy. Your enemy according to Imade was written way back in August 2019 about police brutality.
Imade, one of the cleanest breed of musician to come out of the Anikulapo family says, your real enemy is not the Nigeria Police Force but the system, a police force that is not well catered for and its attendant consequence, corruption.
Speaking on Wazobia FM, Femi Kuti said his son, Imade recorded the album in 10 days in Paris, a feat studio experts in France thought would never be possible with an artist recording for the first time.
But Femi attributes the success to the upbringing of his son, Imade. Imade Kuti, he said has total mastery of 5 musical instruments, Skekere, Piano, Drum, the Saxophone and Bass guitar besides his uniqueness in vocalization.
Imade Kuti, he said started playing music at the age of five shortly after his talent was discovered by Yeni Kuti in a bus in London. Imade had picked up a musical instrument and was able to utilize in it for a child of his age.
Yeni, he said told him to immediately give him access to the instrument. Since then, Imade has been playing and at age 6 he became one of those who opened the new Afrika Shrine at the Alausa CBD shortly after the original shrine was relocated from the Iconic Pepple Street, Ikeja.
But at age 9, Femi decided to ease him of the band in other to force him to go to school.
“I sacked him because he didn’t want to go to school and I did not want my son to suffer the same fate with me. I am the product of my father’s experiment who wanted to prove that you could succeed in life without going to school”, he said.
Imade went to the university to study before heading abroad to study music. To emphasize his complete trust in his son, Femi said the would-be wife of Imade must pay him some money. “Because this one na complete package”, Femi said jokingly.
