NNEWI, Nigeria – Anambra State Government has commended community participation in the growth and development of health centres in communities.  Governor Willie Obiano made the commendation during the inauguration of Akaboezem Health Centre, Uruagu, Nnewi.

The Governor was represented at the event by his Special Adviser, on Budget, Planning and Implementation, Chief Melie Onyejepu.

The people of Akaboezem community, with approval from Nnewi North Local Government Area (LGA), constructed the health facility.

Willie, while commending the community for working as a family, stated that it was good that “when government is working, communities are also working as government cannot do it all’’.

“Government  has provided all that is needed for health facilities to grow, one of which is Anambra State Primary Healthcare Development Agency (ASPHCDA) and Anambra State Health Insurance Scheme (ASHIS), two institutions that are important for communities to key into.’’ he said

He also   announced a donation of N500,000 to the facility for purchase of hospital consumables while  Commissioner for Health and Executive Secretary, ASPHCDA would work on equipping the facility.

Executive Secretary, ASPHCDA, Dr Chioma Ezenyimulu while commending the community for the initiative noted that this was the agency’s second visit to Uruagu, Nnewi as they had earlier in the year, been to Ndiezenwankwo for similar inauguration of a health centre.

“We are delighted to see these communities participate in efforts to have Primary Health Centers (PHC) in their localities.  What we are practicing is Primary Healthcare Under One Roof (PHCUOR) an initiative from the Federal Ministry of Health; we thank our Governor for being very proactive and dogged in this drive.

Under him, Anambra qualified for Basic Healthcare Provision Fund (BHCPF), which is a percent of the consolidated revenue of the federation going to primary healthcare, ” she said.  Ezenyimulu said primary healthcare remains the first point of call for healthcare services in communities.
