ECOWAS endorses Okonjo Iweala for WTO job
LAGOS, Nigeria – The Economic Community of West African States(ECOWAS) has endorsed the candidature of Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala for the position of Director General, World Trade Organisation, WTO.
Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala was Nigeria’s former Minister of Finance and has served in reputable international organisations including the World Bank.
In a statement endorsing her signed by HE Mahamadou Issoufou, President, ECOWAS said no African person has ever occupied position of WTO.
World Trade Organisation(WTO) was formed January 1, 1995 as successor to General Agreement on Trade and Tariff(GATT) formed January 1, 1948.

ECOWAS noted since 1948, no African has become DG of either GATT or WTO, and called on all African countries and non-African countries to endorse her candidature.
If appointed DG, Dr. Ngonzi Okonjo Iweala will serve WTO from 2021-2025, a five year period.
Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala is Board Chair at Gavi and 2-time Minister of Finance, Nigeria and former Managing Director Operations World Bank.
