How appointments are made in LASU – VC
LAGOS, Nigeria – Vice Chancellor of Lagos State University, (LASUTH) Professor Olanrewaju Adigun Fagbohun has said appointments in the university are merit-driven and not based on sentiments.
The professor of Environmental Law made the assertion when officials of Nigeria Medical Association (NMA) led by the National President, Dr. Francis Faduyile, paid him a courtesy visit at his office at the Main Campus, Ojo, on Monday, 2nd March, 2020.
According to Dr. Faduyile, the 11-man National delegation was at the university to appreciate the Vice Chancellor for his exemplary leadership and to pledge the Association’s support for the Institution.
Responding to comments from the NMA National President, the Vice Chancellor, Professor Fagbohun, said: “Mr President, you appreciated us for recognizing some of your members and appointing them to positions in the University. For us, it’s not about sentiments or emotions. We look for who can do the job. Appointments are merit driven”, he said.

Commenting on the face-off between the Nigeria Universities Commission (NUC) and the Nigeria Medical and Dental Association arising from the former’s directive that lecturers in Medical Schools in the country must obtain PhD before being allowed to teach, the Vice Chancellor called for an amicable resolution to the issue.
” It is important that we maintain the peace that we have had in the sector in the last few years. I know that the NUC Executive Secretary is a man who is always open to engagements and I am happy that you are meeting him to find an amicable solution to the issue.”
While acknowledging the University’s College of Medicine as a flagship of Medical Colleges in Nigeria, Professor Fagbohun, praised Faduyile, an export of the College, for his leadership. “In LASU, we say we are LASU, we are proud! But LASUCOM, now says, “we are LASUCOM, the Pride of LASU”, that tells you the kind of healthy rivalry that we have among our faculties. And I thank you because that is the kind of leadership you are also providing at the NMA”.

Earlier, in his remark, Dr. Faduyile, praised the Vice Chancellor for rewriting the story of the 38 year old institution: “We are here to congratulate you for what you have done in the last four years. Those who know LASU before now, know that the University is very restive, but you brought stability.
“On behalf of all doctors in Nigeria, we appreciate you for the stability that you brought to LASU, and even at the College of Medicine. You have consistently supported the College, and more importantly, you have continued to show confidence in our members, by appointing them to positions.”
He went on to pledge the Association’s support for the university: “we want to assure you that our support guaranteed whenever it is required. We are also available to assist and partner with the University whenever the need arises”, he promised.
