Coronavirus: WAEC cancels examination
LAGOS, Nigeria – The West African Examination Council(WAEC) has suspended the West African Senior Secondary School Examination(WASSCE) earlier scheduled for April 6, 2020.
Globally, a total of 242, 488 people have been infected by the Coronavirus pandemic with 9, 885 death. Coronavirus is already in West Africa where WAEC is to be written. Cameroon has the highest confirmed cases, reporting 14 cases so far, followed by Nigeria with 12 confirmed cases. Ghana is next with 11 confirmed cases.

In a statement, WAEC said it is suspending the examination as a result of the deadly Coronavirus pandemic and its serious implication for the candidates during the examination coupled with the anxiety the Coronavirus pandemic has generated in members of the public.
“This decision is a demonstration of the organisation’s concern and support for the various protocols being put in place by the Federal and state governments of Nigeria and the governments of the other member countries to check the spread of the disease”, Head of National Office, WAEC Nigeria, Mr. Patrick Ehidiamen Areghan said in a statement.
According to him, the earlier released timetable for the conduct of the examination is hereby suspended until further notice.

“We wish to assure all candidates and the schools presenting candidates for the examination, all stakeholders, and indeed the general public that this decision will be reviewed once the health situation improves.
“We enjoin all school principles presenting candidates for the examination to please inform the candidates accordingly”, he said, adding that a new date for the examination will be communicated to the schools and the candidates in due course.
