WASHINGTON – The United States has applauded the decision of authorities in Montenegro to convict two officers of Russian GRU for attempted terrorism in Montenegro.
In a statement, Spokesman Department of State, Morgan Ortagus described the conviction as a clear victory for the rule of law, laying bare Russia’s brazen attempt to undermine the sovereignty of an independent European nation.
“Today’s court ruling in Montenegro finding two Russian GRU officers guilty of attempted terrorism is a clear victory for the rule of law, laying bare Russia’s brazen attempt to undermine the sovereignty of an independent European nation”, the department said.
It added that since the thwarted Russian-backed coup attempt on Montenegro’s parliamentary election day in October 2016, Montenegro has taken important steps toward integrating with the Transatlantic family, most notably joining NATO in June 2017.
“The United States is proud to count Montenegro as an Ally and will continue to support Montenegro in its efforts to strengthen the rule of law, protect media freedom, and advance other reforms needed to join the European Union”, the US said.
