ALABAMA, United State – Not less than 23 people have been killed as two tornadoes hit Alabama in the United States in less than one hours smashing buildings and pulling down public structures on its way.
At least 20 people were confirmed dead and several others were injured in Lee County. Among the dead are children, including an 8 year old girl.
Speaking to AFP, Sheriff Jay Jones said those killed includes an 8-year-old girl, and that two people are now in intensive care unit in the hospital.
Rita Smith of Lee County Emergency Management Agency told AFP that most deaths and injuries occurred in in Lee County, an area in the eastern part of the state near the Georgia line.
Jones said single-family homes and mobile homes were destroyed and that several people were taken to hospitals, some with “very serious injuries.”
Alabama Emergency Management Agency spokesman Gregory Robinson said no deaths have been reported in the state beyond Lee County.
Speaking on the incident, President Donald J. Trump said, “to the great people of Alabama and surrounding areas: Please be careful and safe. Tornadoes and storms were truly violent and more could be coming. To the families and friends of the victims, and to the injured, God bless you all!”, he said.
