LAGOS, Nigeria – Publisher of Genevieve magazine Betty Irabor has said that she attempted to take her life during the period she was suffering from depression. ” The voice I continue to hear was that I have failed”, she said, all that was left was to take her life. Betty Irabor who was speaking on “Your View”, on TV continental said the incident happened on Sunday morning when the family was preparing to go to church for worship.

“I was waiting for my husband to go to church before I will take my life, so I told my husband, that I am not going. But my husband said I will go if you will come with me. It was then I quickly took my antidepressant rushed into the toilet to ingest all the tablets. But before I could shut the door my husband blocked the door with his leg, and I started shouting, let me die, let me die”, she said.

Betty Irabor, who is the wife of popular broadcaster, Soni Irabor, attributed her coming out of depression to her husband, whom she described as a very caring man that was always there for her and each time she needed to see a doctor.

She also spoke of the role manner of approach and empathy played in her recovery process. She said while the approach in Nigeria was rather not complementary, what she got in Dubai was very professional and loving.

She said without doing much, the doctor who attended to her brought out smiles out her due to the manner of approach and that when she left, it was as though some dose of drugs were injected into her blood streams. “I was told that I will look better if I take a lot of water and sleep” well. Besides, she said she was told the drugs she was given in Nigeria were just too much, and were mainly duplicated.

She pointed out that while going about her recovery, she decided to tackle it headlong, leaving spirituality out of the question. For those still suffering from depression, she advised them not to allow the thoughts that they have failed to overwhelm them.

She also documented her experience in the book, Dust to Dew” for posterity, which she initially thought would be too much of an insight into her life but had to bow to pressure from her publisher for the sake many who will need it to come out of depression.
