Book detailing assault of Fela’s wives as army burns down Kalakuta Republic released
LAGOS, Nigeria – A book entitled Bruised, Battered and Beloved has reportedly been released online by Kindle Publishing, the e-book publishing arm of Amazon.
We gathered that the book written by Tade Makinde revealed how wives of the late Afrobeat King, Fela Anikulapo Kuti were assaulted when the military invaded Kalakuta republic and set it alight.

The attack on Kalakuta was inspired by one of Fela’s hit songs, “Zombie”. After soldiers, said to have numbered into hundreads invaded Kalakuta, and threw his beloved mother, Fumilayo Ransome Kuti from the window of the second-storey building in February 18, 1997.
Kalakuta was home to Fela Anikulapo Kuti, his mother, the activist and matriarch of the Kuti clan, Funmilayo Ransome Kuti, his children and his band and several wives.
“On that day, 41 years ago today, Nigerians, Lagos to a larger extent and the residents of Kalakuta Republic, in particular, got front row seats to the carnage, disregard for life and destruction with which the Nigerian military’s participation in government is associated till this day”, it was reported about Fela.
