Many injured as loaded passenger train derails in Lagos

IKEJA, Lagos, Nigeria – Many passengers were this morning injured when the passenger train conveying them to Iddo, Ebute Metta, from Iju station, in Ogun State derailed at Mongoro, very close to former Punch premises on the Lagos- Abeokuta Express way.

No life was lost. The incident which occured as early as 7.15 am attracted alot of passersby leading to heavy vehicular movement in the area. The train was said to have derailed due to faulty tracks.

Eye witness say that all those who were severely injured in the accident have been rushed to the General Hosptial in Ikeja and other hospitals, for treatment.

Efforts are currently on ground to evacuate the coaches and free the tracks. NRC crane has also been despatched to the scene from Lagos Island. As at the time of filing this report, officials of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, LASEMA, paramedics , LASAMBUS, FRSC, LASTMA and members of the Nigeria Police are on ground helping with the recovery process.
