BANGLADESH – Sheikh Hasina has been re-elected for the third time as Prime Minister of Bangladesh.She also gained majority in parliament. Her ruling party and allies got 288 of the 300 parliamentary seats.

The opposition which won just 7 seats have called for cancellation of the polls alleging voter intimidation and violence. But the ruling party also alleged attacks by opposition, noting that at least 7 members of the ruling party were killed during the polls.

“We urge the election commission to void this farcical result immediately. We are demanding that a fresh election is held under a neutral government as early as possible, opposition leader Kamal Hossain has said.

At least 17 people have been killed in clashes between supporters of the ruling party and the opposition.

Not less than 47 candidates from the main opposition alliance withdrew from the polls, alleging vote rigging and intimidation, while observers warned that the vote would not be fair.
