ADO-EKITI, Nigeria – The Independent National Electoral Commission(INEC) has declared Dr. Kayode Fayemi as winner of the July 14 governorship election held in Ekiti.
Returning Officer, Prof. Abel Idowu Olayinka declared him winner having scored a total of 197, 459 votes to beat his closest rival, Professor Olusola Eleka,candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, (PDP) who scored 178, 121 votes. Thirty-four candidates contested the July 14 governorship election under 34 parties.
According to INEC, a total of 909,585 electorates are registered voters in Ekiti State, 405, 861were accredited for the election, while 403, 451 votes were total votes cast, 384,594 were valid votes while 18, 857 votes were rejected.
” That John Olukayode Fayemi of the APC having satisfied the requirement of the law and scored the highest number of votes is hereby declared winner and returned elected”, INEC returning officer said.
Professor Idowu Olayinka is the Vice Chancellor of the University of Ibadan.
