ORGANIZATION FOR WOMEN IN SCIENCE IN DEVELOPING WORLD, LASU INAUGURATES EXECUTIVES, PATRONS

LAGOS, Nigeria – Organisation for Women in Science in Developing World has inaugurated executives of the Lagos State University Branch at the S. L Edu Lecture Hall, Faculty of Science, Main Campus, Ojo. Speaking at the Inauguration Ceremony, the Vice Chancellor, Prof, Lanre Fagbohun represented by the Former Dean, Faculty of Management Sciences, Prof. Banji Fajonyomi charged the female scientists in the University to believe in themselves as possessing enough capacity to attain laudable heights in their research findings.

He also emphasized the need for network and peer support within and outside the University and outspokenness about their research findings as well as mentorship as major ways to ensure the stability of OWSD. In his address, the Dean, Faculty of Science, Prof Benjamin Aribisala encouraged the gathering to see the Inauguration Ceremony as a call to duty not just to enable participation but also to improve the participation of female scientists beyond the University.

Also speaking at the Inauguration Ceremony was the National President, OWSD, Prof Afuwape represented by Prof Joy Okpuzor who took time to give the historical background of the Organization and the benefits of membership, and how to maximize them. Sharing from her personal experiences since she joined the Organization in 1993, research grants, networking, trainings and awards are some of the benefits members stand to enjoy. Prof Okpuzor concluded by charging members to encourage their Postgraduate students to embrace OWSD.

In her acceptance speech, one of the Patrons, the Managing Director, Federal Institute of Industrial Research (FIRO), Oshodi, Prof Gloria Elemo was full of gratitude to the Executives for her appointment as a patron and assured them of her commitment to the course of the LASU Branch of the Organization. She, however, charged the Executives to ensure that they work hard to move the Organization from the stage of “developing” to the level of “developed”.
