LAGOS, Nigeria – Twenty years after his demise, more revelation have continued to emerge about the death of winner of June 12, 1993 election, Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola. This time, the revelation is coming from a professor who went into exile in the struggle for actualisation of the June 12 mandate, Professor Adesegun Banjo.

The professor spoke at the weekend at the first Southern Nigeria-Middle-Belt Indigenous Peoples’ Peace conference held in Lagos. According to him, the British took out Nigeria’s former military dictator, General Sani Abacha when his economic policy became unfavourable to the British hegemony.

He explained that they refused to accept Chief M.K.O Abiola after taking out Abacha for championing reparation for Africans. For him, the call for reparation was antithetical to the British economy, moreover when they felt that it would be impossible to manipulate him.

He told audience that they opted for Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, who was then in jail because he is favourable to the North and would be easy to manipulate from the outside.

“They brought him and made him to run with Chief Olu Falae and they rigged the election for him”, he said to serve their purpose. He attributed the continued dominance of power in Nigeria by the Fulani to imposition by the British, stressing that they are in the minority and very easy to manipulate.

He argued that the menace of the Fulani herdsmen in Nigeria is not about cow but about making Nigeria a conquered territory. According to him, the Fulanis failed in Guinea, where they constitute 40 percent of the population and in Senegal, stressing that in these areas, the people have made it virtually impossible for them to rule and that they have seen Nigeria as a willing territory to conquer. “ Cows are warriors for the Fulanis so that later the Fulanis can move in. They are not here for the cows, they are here to conquer”, the retired professor of Human Anatomy warned.

He said that for the way forward, Nigerians must insist on restructuring before election in 2019. “No election until after restructuring. Speak of it in the Mosque, in the churches. We must restructure now”, he said, stressing that freedom is a gift from Allah and that people must be willing to sacrifice for it”, and that the people of the South and Middle Belt must come together and make pronouncement on it, he said.

In his message to the occasion, President, The Southern Nigeria and Middle Belt Forum for Development, Mr. Sydney Imobhio alluded to attacks by Fulani herdsmen that has killed and rendered many homeless in Benue State, Taraba State, Nassarawa, Plateau, Kogi, Kwara and many territories in the Middle Belt.

“In many southern states like Osun, Nimmo in Enugu, we have seen gory scenes of attacks on our people. It is our historic responsibilities to bring back peace into our fatherland. We have to do this by coming together, share our experiences, hold the shoulder of one another and approach the greater future with collective enthusiasm. Our weapons is neither guns but the indigenous knowledge God has given us to engage other nationalities in Nigeria in a constructive way for peace to reign in Nigeria and for abundance of joy and peace of the mind”, he said.

He said that in the past, under military regime, the talk was government unleashing violence on the people but today, violence is being unleashed by the citizens on themselves, and called for halt in the carnage in the Middle Belt.

“ These problems cannot be eliminated if we work alone. In unity lay our strength. This is the first real effort at uniting the people of the South and the Middle Belt”, he said, stressing “We are determined to work together on the principle that threat to anyone is threat to all… We call on men men and women of the creeks, farmers of the Plateau and the plain fields, the hunters of the valleys and others in the thick forests and the Savannah Belt to come together under the new great banner for freedom and unity of our people”, he said.
