IKEJA, Lagos, Nigeria – The Lagos State Government has launched Uniform Sentencing Guidelines for judicial officers in the state to create a benchmark for sentencing offenders across courts in the state.




Chief Judge of Lagos, Justice Opeyemi Oke launched the Uniform Sentencing Guildelines at the inauguration of the Criminal Justice Sector Reform Committee in Lagos. She said uniform sentencing was necessary to avoid a situation where some courts or judges will impose lesser sentence, while others will impose more punitive sentence for the same offence.

She said that an effective criminal justice system is regarded by many as fundamental to the maintenance of law and order, stressing that a society with sound criminall justice system enjoys rapid economic growth.

She alluded to the setting up of the Deoxyribonucleic Acid(DNA) Laboratory set up recently by the Lagos State Government, noting that it will not only aid investigation officers in the rapid conclusion of their investigation where evidence on DNA is required but that it will also assist the prosecuting offiers to be more diligent in their work of prosecution.

While refering to special offences court set up to speed up matters related to economic and financial crimes and sexual offences, she said there has also been various landmark interventions to accelerate disposal of cases in both the Magistrate and High Courts as well as to improve the decongestions of prisons and the seamless transmission of cases files from the police to office of the Directorate of Public Prosecutions.

“Bail Information system and Bondspersons are also working towards guidelines for setting up of this aspect of the Justice Sector Reform, she said. The 18-members Justice Reform Committee are Hon. Justice .O.A Ipaye, Hon Justice M. J. Coker, Hon Justice M. A. Dada, Hon Justice H.O. Oshodi, Hon Justice J.E. Oyefeso, Hon O. A. Oyefeso, Hon Justic O. A. Williams and Hon Justice O. Taiwo.

Others are Hon Justice S. O Nwaka, Hon Justice O. A . Okikiolu-Ighile, Hon Justice O. A. Ogala, Hon Justice S. S. Ogunsanya, Hon Justice A. A. Akintoye, Hon Justice S. O. Solebo, Mrs. D. T Olatokun, DCR Admin, Ikeja, Mrs. F. A. Azeez, Mrs. T. Akanni, Mrs. Ipaye-Nwachukwu and Mrs. B.O Osunsanmi.
