LAGOS, Nigeria – A Special Offences Court sitting in Ikeja, Lagos today committed 58 year old Obinna Ezeike to 60 years imprisonment for defiling a 12 year old girl contrary to section 137 of the criminal law of Lagos State.
While pronouncing her judgement, Justice Sybil Nwaka noted that incident of rape has assumed astronomical dimension adding that the rate at which men are crawling around looking for females to defile is rather alarming.
“The girl child is no long safe in the custody of brothers, uncles and even father. I hereby sentence you to 60 years imprisonment with hard labour”, she said and encourage parents to come forward to disclose cases of this nature and that the state of Lagos has zero tolerance for cases of defilement.
Earlier, the judge alluded to the plea of the defendant during allocution for the court to tamper justice with mercy. She agreed with the Prosecutor, BT. Oye who had urged the court to allow justice to take its course as rape is now rampart in the society and that the situation where the girl child cannot freely move around even in schools should be condemned, stressing that the state will deal decisively with any one found guilty of the offence.
Obinna had during the arraignment earlier pleaded guilty to the offence.
