AFTER 4 ABORTIONS, WOMAN WEEPS, TELLS HUSBAND, ‘YOU CAN’T DIVORCE ME NOW’
IKEJA, Lagos – Chinwe Ajadi, a woman who has been childless in marriage in the past 16 years today wept profusely in court, swearing and threatening that she will never allow her husband to divorce her.
She told the court that the husband, Oluwafemi Ajadi, a hotelier had forced her into abortion on four occasions before legalising the marriage, wondering why he is interested in divorce now that she can no longer have a child. Oluwafemi Ajadi had filed suit to end his marriage on grounds of infidelity, lack of love and threat to life, pleaded with an Agege Customary Court in Lagos to dissolve the union.
The petitioner, an indigene of Ibadan in Oyo State, told the court on Monday that he was no longer interested in the marriage.
“My wife is a party freak, I warned her to desist from moving with bad friends but she did not heed my warning. she likes frolicking with different men. She is not caring and lack respect for the institution of marriage; please separate us, I can no longer live with her,” he said.
His wife, Chinwe, 35, however, denied the allegations and urged the court to save her marriage amid tears. The respondent, a trader and an indigene of Imo described the husband as a drunk and wife beater. She alleged that the petitioner beats her at will and abuses her emotionally because she could not conceive.
“My husband usually drinks to stupor and misbehaves with me which usually leads to serious misunderstandings between us. The respondent swore never to dissolve the union with her husband.
” l have aborted on several occasions for him before legalising the marriage and have wasted the better part of my life. “Inspite of my husband’s attitude towards me, l still love him and do not want the marriage dissolved,” She said. The petitioner, however refused to accept the court’s pleadings to give the wife another chance but urged the court to dissolve the union.
“I wasted several millions of naira on the respondent through In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) but lost the pregnancy due to her stubbornness and nonchalant attitude.”, he said. The Court’s President, Mrs Ibironke Elabor, urged the estranged couple to keep peace and adjourned the case until Dec. 14 for judgment.
