IKEJA, Lagos, Nigeria – A 35 year old man, Agu Echezona Harrison was today arraigned before a Lagos High Court, sitting in Ikeja, for alleged violation of his six year old daughter.
The defendant was arraigned on one count charge of sexual assault by penetration contrary to section 259 of the criminal law of Lagos State 2011. He pleaded not guilty.
Meanwhile Justice Sedotan Ogunsanya has ordered that he be remanded in Kirikiri Prison pending when he will be produced in court for trial.
According to the information before the court, the defendant who resides at no, 23, Rotimi Omotosho street, Isheri Osun, Lagos had between 2013 to 2015 sexually assaulted his daughter (name withheld) of about 6 years old by inserting his finger into the girl’s vaginal.
The defendant’s lawyer E. C Ebiem moved motion for bail but was vehemently opposed by the state counsel , Mr. Adebayo Haruna. While opposing the bail application, the lawyer informed the court that the victim is defendant’s daughter adding that the defendant has been threatening the complainer, who happens to be his wife and mother of the victim.
Haruna however urged the court to refuse the prayers of the defendant and refused him bail.
” I have heard both counsels, the act is so rampant in the society now . In the interest of justice I demand accelerated hearing in this matter. The Defendant should be remanded in the Kirikiri maximum prison”, he said and adjourned till 20 November for commencement of trial.
