IKEJA, Lagos, Nigeria – The management of Sun Newspapers has embarked on mass sacking of workers in a bid to keep the newspaper on the newsstand.

We gathered that the Eric Osagie led newspaper has sacked over 20 staff in editorial in what has been described as the beginning of massive retrenchment exercise in the newspaper.

Sources informed our reporter that among those most affected are elderly staff on the stable. The newspaper which has been on the newsstand for over one decades has been up to date when it comes to payment of salaries and Basic Transport Allowance, BTA.

We gathered that the economic recession compounded it woes. “The adverts which sustains the newspaper are no longer forthcoming as usual”, a source confided in our reporter.

The Sun Newspaper came out with a bang as the only tabloid and succeeded in breaking even within one year of existence but changed the focus of the daily edition, which seemed to have impacted negatively on the fortune of the newspaper.
