ABUJA, Nigeria – Inspector General of Police, Mr. Ibrahim Idris has filed a suit at a Federal High Court, Abuja seeking relief to stop the Senate from probing his alleged excesses.
The Chairman, Senate Committee on Navy, Senator Isah Hamma Misau had alleged that the Inspector-General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, impregnated a serving deputy superintendent of police (DSP), Esther an act which he said contravened the police act.
“The IG is openly having two relationships with police women which he gave special promotion. One of them is Amina and one of them is DSP Esther which the IG on 15th of last month got married to that woman DSP. Under police act and regulation you cannot marry as serving woman police unless that woman retires.
“He quickly did a secret wedding in Kaduna because the lady is four months pregnant. I am saying this because of the institution – that institution I am supposed to be a stakeholder in that institution. It is the institution that brought me here which I’m proud of,” he said.
The lawmaker representing Bauchi central also raised allegation of corruption against the IGP, accusing the IGP of collecting bribes, ranging from N10m to N15m from Commissioners of Police, State Mobile Commanders and Special Protection Units (SPU) Commanders, for favourable postings.
According to him, the IGP makes up to N10bn monthly from oil companies, banks and private individuals who enjoy special protection from the security agency.
In the suit pending at a Federal High Court in Abuja, Ibrahim Idris begged the FCT High Court to restrain the Senate committee investigating allegations against him from hearing or taking a decision on the matter.
IGP Idris also wants the court to restrain the Senate President and the entire Senate from receiving and discussing any report submitted to it by the committee set up to investigate the allegations against him.
Counsel to the IGP, Charles Ogoli, Emmanuel Anene and Solomon Ayangkong Ikongshul have joined Senate President Bukola Saraki and the Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria as respondents.
The IGP stated that Senator Isa Misau, while raising matter of urgent national importance between September and October, 2017 accused him of mounting road blocks across Nigeria with the purpose of extorting money from unsuspecting motorists.
He also stated that the said senator in the motion also accused him of collecting illegal fees by way of security protections given to corporate organisation, eminent citizens and oil companies running into billions of naira.
Idris also stated that Misau accused him of having “unwholesome relationship with female officers in the force.” There is no date for hearing.
